My favorite Lunar New Year traditions

Lunar New Year begins on Wednesday, January 29th this year! 2025 is the Year of the Snake, which according to some sources, means it's a time of growth and transformation.

I grew up celebrating Chinese New Year, and I’ve always loved the joy and sense of community it brings to the start of the year.

Here are some of my favorite traditions:
  • Cleaning to sweep away bad luck — must be done before new years, otherwise you'll sweep away the good luck in the coming year!
  • Wearing red clothes for good luck
  • Setting off firecrackers to ward off evil spirits
  • Handing out red envelopes to share blessings (and cash)
  • Visiting with friends and family
  • Setting up altars and burning joss paper to honor ancestors
  • Eating traditional new years foods that symbolize abundance — and luckily are also super delicious!

While traditions vary across countries and cultures, they all share a common focus on celebrating family, abundance, and good fortune. Whether you celebrate or not, I hope 2025 holds a lot of positive growth and joy for you. ❤️

XO
